§ 54-31. Powers of board of public works and safety regulating traffic.

  • (a)

    Rules and regulations. The board of public works and safety is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to make such rules and regulations from time to time as it may deem necessary for the control and regulation of traffic on the streets and alleys of the city pursuant to the ordinances of the city.

    (b)

    Automatic signal devices. The board of public works and safety is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to make and promulgate such orders from time to time as it may deem necessary for the establishment and maintenance of automatic signal devices at such street intersections in the city as it may deem necessary and advisable.

    (c)

    Preferential streets. The board of public works and safety is hereby authorized, empowered and directed from time to time as it may deem proper to designate and declare certain streets in the city to be preferential streets.

    (d)

    Preferential intersections. The board of public works and safety is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to designate as it may see fit from time to time any street or alley intersection as hazardous, and to cause the intersection to be marked by appropriate signs designating which street shall have the preference at such intersection.

    (e)

    Installation of traffic signs, signals and street markings. The board of public works and safety is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to cause to be placed and maintained official signs, signals and street markings at all places and points where they may be necessary and practicable, in the judgment of such board, for the guidance, instruction and regulation of drivers and pedestrians pursuant to the ordinances of the city, including the installation and maintenance of stop signs and other signs indicating preferential streets, alleys and zones of quiet, and slow signs for public schools or other points.

    (f)

    General powers. The board of public works and safety is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to make all detailed rules and regulations and install and maintain all signs, signals, markings and directions that may be necessary for the due and proper enforcement of the ordinances of the city.
